Sitting opposite a larger person at mealtimes encourages you to eat less than normal Surprisingly, the portion sizes remain the same but the amount they actually eat varies depending on the size of the person they are dining with, it revealed. So if a thin person orders a large portion, so will their dining companion and they will tend to finish what's on their plate. If a fat diner orders a large portion, so will their friend, but the friend will not necessarily eat it all. More than 200 student volunteers were tested by pairing them up, one by one, with a researcher at a cinema screening. The guinea pigs were told their taste in films was being studied. The eight stone researcher sometimes remained in her natural state, but at other times wore a fat suit which made her look a size 16 and around 13 stone, said the study. On each occasion she ordered food in either a small or large portion and the volunteer was offered the same snack and the same choice in portion size. The results, published in the Journal of Consumer Research, showed the choice made by the 210 volunteers was heavily influenced by what the undercover researcher was having.
